I blogged last week saying that I was headed out on a new adventure, and looking for a new project to throw my skills into. Unexpectedly, I’m here now to announce that I’ve accepted an offer to stay in my current position at Automattic as Day One’s Head of Engineering.
These weeks represent two “firsts” in my career:
- Having given my energy to one project for an extended time period (eight years)
- Given the choice to stay or go; choosing to stay
My long-time colleagues know from the number of times I moved my desk around the office that I like change. And it seems like some subconscious part of me expected my life to be broken up into chapters. At intervals I’d leave something behind and start fresh. I did this when I left high school and went on to college. I largely did this after college when starting my professional life. I’ve done this each time I left a job and moved to a new company.
This time, I made a meta-change: When the chance came to change, I didn’t, which, ironically, is itself a change.
That said, I’m approaching my same position with a renewed perspective, determination, and excitement driven by energy that I’d previously been directing outward as I wondered what my next move would be.
???? Here’s to finding out that the old adventure is the new adventure!
